Friends With Benefits: A New Model for Social Tokens. The Ethereum community gets to ask itself everyday, “what is money?” Before cryptocurrencies and tokens even emerged, a rich intellectual history has been written on the anthropology and sociology of money. Nigel Dodd in The Social Life of Money (2014) argues that money is a “claim upon society” since it expresses a form of debt between an individual and society as a whole. (more)

Term from Eric Raymond's Cathedral And The Bazaar. When you start community-building, what you need to be able to present is a plausible promise. Your program doesn't have to work particularly well. It can be crude, buggy, incomplete, and poorly documented. What it must not fail to do is (a) run, and (b) convince potential co-developers that it can be evolved into something really neat in the foreseeable future. (more)

May'2014: Darius Kazemi has shifted to keeping his Side Project-s small. It does not matter how or frivolous a project seems: everything you do adds to your body of work. I can’t stress this enough: you are not just creating a bunch of small things. You are creating an EcoSystem of projects... If you make lots of small projects, you can approach the same idea from many, many different angles. This can be really interesting... Making lots of small projects means you stay constantly excited. You literally cannot be bored with work if you stop working on it the moment become bored... Having lots of projects means you can watch your aesthetic develop over time very quickly... You make stuff, and you’re going to like certain things, but you can’t predict what other people will like. So even if you make something and you think it sucks, put it out there. Maybe people will hate it, maybe they’ll ignore it, or maybe they’ll like it. But just put it out there... Out of my 72 projects last year, I’d say 10 of them were successful in some substantial way. That’s 1 out of 7 projects. At that rate, if I made one project a year, it would take me SEVEN YEARS to make something that caught on with the public. By focusing on small projects, I can experience 10 major successes a year. (Quantity Beats Quality) (more)

"The Mother of All Demos" is a name given retrospectively to Douglas Engelbart's December 9, 1968, computer demonstration at the Fall Joint Computer Conference in San Francisco. The live demonstration featured the introduction of a complete computer hardware—software system called the oN-Line System or more commonly, NLS. The 90-minute presentation essentially demonstrated almost all the fundamental elements of modern personal computing: multiple windows, HyperText, graphics, efficient navigation and command input, Video Conferencing, the Computer Mouse, word processing, dynamic file linking, revision control (Version Control System), and a collaborative Real Time editor (Collaborative Writing). Engelbart's presentation was the first to publicly demonstrate all these elements in a single system. The demonstration was highly influential and spawned similar projects at Xerox PARC in the early 1970s... Engelbart's onstage terminal keyboard and mouse were linked by a homemade modem at 2400 baud through a leased line that connected to ARC's SDS 940 computer in Menlo Park, 48 kilometers southeast of San Francisco. Two microwave links carried video[6] from Menlo Park back to an Eidophor video projector loaned by NASA's Ames Research Center, and, on a 22-foot-high (6.7 m) screen with video insets, the audience could follow Engelbart's actions on his display, observe how he used the mouse, and watch as members of his team in Menlo Park joined in the presentation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mother_of_All_Demos includes links to sites with the Video-s! TypeScript is a programming language developed and maintained by Microsoft. It is a strict syntactical superset of JavaScript and adds optional static typing to the language. TypeScript is designed for the development of large applications and transcompiles to JavaScript.[4] As TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript, existing JavaScript programs are also valid TypeScript programs. TypeScript may be used to develop JavaScript applications for both client-side and server-side execution (as with Node.js or Deno). There are multiple options available for transcompilation. Either the default TypeScript Checker can be used,[5] or the Babel compiler can be invoked to convert TypeScript to JavaScript. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TypeScript

Deno is a runtime for JavaScript and TypeScript that is based on the V8 JavaScript engine and the Rust programming language. Deno was co-created by Ryan Dahl, who also created Node.js.[6] It was announced by Dahl in 2018 during his talk "10 Things I Regret About Node.js".[7] Deno explicitly takes on the role of both runtime and package manager within a single executable, rather than requiring a separate package-management program. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deno_(software)
